ICAREWOUNDS project had made significant progress in recent months identifying best practices in the treatment of chronic wounds and designing a model applicable across the EU. The project aims to improve the management of these common and challenging conditions.
Since the project’s launch in May, the consortium of seven entities from different EU countries has been working intensively to design a standardized care model for chronic wound management based on digitalization and artificial intelligence (AI). During the initial phase, a comprehensive analysis of care processes in Spain, Ireland, and Poland was conducted, as these countries will serve as the foundation for clinical trials. This analysis identified best practices for treating chronic wounds, such as pressure ulcers and diabetic foot ulcers, leading to the development of an integrated, scalable, and EU-applicable care model adaptable to various healthcare systems.
With the care model established, the consortium has made significant strides in developing a digital platform integrating advanced AI technologies. This platform will enable healthcare professionals to manage and monitor chronic wound conditions, offering personalized recommendations based on clinical analyses. By incorporating eHealth technologies, clinicians will be able to track cases more effectively, facilitating more precise clinical decision-making.
A key innovation of ICAREWOUNDS is its focus on personalized treatment for each patient. The digital platform will provide recommendations not only for medical treatment of the wounds but also for other critical recovery factors, such as hygiene and nutrition. These complementary aspects will allow healthcare professionals to deliver holistic care, accelerating recovery, preventing complications, and improving patients’ quality of life.
The project has also advanced collaboration with healthcare professionals and patient groups in Spain, Ireland, and Poland to integrate valuable clinical knowledge into the solution’s design. In the coming months, the platform will be further refined, and its AI algorithms will be trained to provide more precise, wound-specific recommendations.
Second In-Person Meeting in Dublin
The second in-person meeting of the consortium, held last November in Dublin, marked a key milestone in ICAREWOUNDS development. During the meeting, the progress made over the past six months was presented, and the next steps for platform development were outlined.
ICAREWOUNDS has the potential to transform chronic wound care in Europe. Chronic wounds place a significant financial and resource burden on healthcare systems. The digital platform is expected to accelerate healing, reduce medical costs, and enhance patient quality of life. Additionally, with proper implementation, the project could result in substantial savings for European healthcare systems while improving patient outcomes.
